I still have my copy of his book From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African-Americans that I got as a teenager and cannot imagine ever parting with it.
His work truly helped shape my life.
He died yesterday of congestive heart failure in a hospital in Durham, N.C. He was 94. The Washington Post wonderful tribute to Franklin on their website.
